Demo 2 is out!

Hello once again!

The demo 2 is finally out with a lot to talk about!

First of all, the focus

Before heading into the updates. I would like to tell you about what was the objective of the development of this update of the game. When Demo 1 released, we stated that the next demo would add a whole new playable section from a brand-new level. However, we changed our mind, and decided that it was better to improve what the game had to offer at the current time, before adding content in a bigger scale.

Scratch my Back Demo 2 doesn't include the new stage, which is still in development, but instead includes lots of new mechanics, art, features and polishing that makes the already existing stages a lot more enjoyable.

Now, without further ado, let's get into the updates!

What's new

  • More controller options. Dualsense, Dualshock 4 and Xbox Controllers are now fully supported.
  • A whole new look for EV-800! With all-new sprites, better animations and new audio effects.
  • EV-800 rework, new moves! The EV-800 now includes a new "shooting attack" where it smashes it's hands on the ground, creating a fire spark for the player to avoid. It's charge attack was reworked so it transforms into a shorter vehicle that can be jumped over by the player.
  • A brand new enemy, L-EV-250! This new enemy flies, chasing a player and tries to stomp them with it's body. It adds variety to battles by making players think their position more carefully. This is also the first enemy to include a death animation.

  • New menus. There's a new main menu which can be controlled entierly with controllers. There's also a new pause menu with the same features.
  • Various UI improvements. The arrows from the teleport now fades slowly in a less distracting way, the tutorials adapt to the controller the player is using, the store shows the currency of each player... there's a lot to add here, but the UI works a lot better than before.
  • An updated cover art, here on itch.io! This new cover art includes the most recent playable character, Kevin.
  • Snow! Yup. It's snowing on the mountain area.

What's next?

  • New hazards.
  • The first section of a new level. We are now certain that that it's time to finish this new city-carnival themed level.
  • Sequenced cinematics. We are currently development a system which takes control of the characters on screen, allow us to create in-game sprite based cutscenes.
  • Improved fighting mechanics. We want to explore different ways to make the combat system more enjoyable. It could be with combos or team moves. We will give you more information about this topic  some other time.
  • New art and animations. We want to expand the the amount of art and animations for players, enemies and stages.

How's the team?

The team is great! The idea of having presential development sessions every saturday is working flawlessly. We truly believe that Scratch my Back is a project with potential, and we're doing our best to make it bigger and better.

So...

Have fun playing this new demo! And don't forget, feedback is always appreciated!

See ya soon!
